Health Psychology

One of the mental health issues related to emotional dysregulation is the development of depression and anxiety (Aldao et al., 2010) and this can come about due to the suppression of negative emotions. With the students in Singapore experiencing more anxiety than those from other countries (Lee, 2018), it is crucial to provide them with social support as early as possible for them to better cope with these issues. This is important as early intervention can promote remission of the mental health issue (Halfin, 2007).

One recommendation from the health promotion point of view using educational appeals, would be to create an intervention program for both the children and their family members. The program will teach the children how to cope with depression and anxiety or seek help and concurrently, teach family members what they can do to help reduce the child’s risk of depression and anxiety. This is important as family members play a big role in helping their children understand and cope with their emotions (KidsMatter, n.d.).

To ensure that this program reaches out to majority of the target population, it can be made compulsory by the school and it can be held on a Sunday when most of the family members are able to attend. Counsellors will teach them coping strategies to counter anxiety and encouragement to seek help if they encounter symptoms of depression to treat or lessen the severity of the mental illnesses (Better Health Channel, n.d.).
